paneled room
My latest effort was a paneled room in appalachian white oak. this wood had excellent grain characteristics and a tight grain to boot.
One row of panels was below the chairail and two above it . the dividing rail between the top panels starts right above the top of the door casing .usually design the window treatment so that the window casing is situated the same height as the door. having two panels above the chairail I think brings things into scale ,rather than having one short panel below the chairail and a relatively long one all the way to the ceiling.
There are basically two ways to do a paneled room ,one the walls are totally sheathed in plywood so frames etc can be attached anywhere and secondly one where all the frame work is joined together .The room shown is joined.
The only stipulation I had to contend with was the entrance, the architect requested a cased door opening with double doors .As as the opening was only 30" this did not in my opinion make much sense both doors [15"doors] had to be open to allow accessto the library and of course the doors could not be locked normally [ie one bolted and the other locked to it]. No amount of discussion could move the architect.
the cased entrance was the first order of business as it was built in one piece and included the doorjambs .
Shown below is the original north wall which has the entrance projecting into the room by 8". the scheme and the execution .
This is how the original east wall looked
this what the scheme looked like
The east wall essentially finished . The electrical outlets were moved to the baseboard and later wooden covers were made for them and the wall switch plate...
This is the original south wall configuration, as this was the only source of exterior light it was suggested that changes be made to allow more light into the room .
The result is that shown below ,an extra window and an increase in size of all windows .
The scheme for this wall is shown below
the blind enclosures were eventually dropped and the windows cased conventionally.
Excuse the shot it is difficult top get enough detail when the background lighting is so bright, in addition this shot consists of three individual shots scarfed together ,and of course fully automated cameras change aperature settings on demand .
The west wall is very similar to the east wall so is not included .
Below is the north wall in its initial state .
Below is cad Below is a CAD [please excuse quality as this was my first try with CAD] drawing of the north wall cabinet ,including the cased entrance .
On installation the whole cabinet was set out about 2" from the wall to allow for wireing runs.
The lower cabinet door stiles were modified to reflect the wall panelling . the lower LH cabinet doors are actually halved and are in effect the face frames for two lateral file cabinets. the ones on the right open normally [using touch latches], housed in the inboard right cabinet is a inkjet printer.
the back of the knee hole incorporates a shelf on which a the CPU sits on. The whole sits behind two small paneled doors.
The normal base and base cap together with the chairail molding wrap around the whole room, cabinet and cased entrance.
immediately under the base cabinet top in the kneehole area is a pullout shelf with a flipdown front which houses a keyboard and mousepad. I use a 45 degree backcut on the bottom of the drawerfront so when up the drawer body is hidden.
The upper cabinet has bookshelves either side of the central cabinet . The central cabinet doors slide back into the enclosure in tracks routed into the top of the base cabinet and the " ceiling " of the enclosure, that way I can reduce the clearance between the doors and the structure to about an 1/8" . The enclosure houses the monitor and other odds and sods on an elevated shelf [including lighting ]
The last thing installed were the doors . The door panels are the same configuration as the walls, including the chair rail .the inside or the cased entrance also has raised panels matching the walls .The doors end up flush with the back of the casing of he cased entrance caseing .
So whether the doors are open or closed the appearance of the sides of the cased entrance is the same .
Here are a couple of shots showing the initial location and the final results ,one with the door ajar and the other closed, which should clarify the preceding statements .
the last two shots are straight on showing the doors open and closed
